Hawaii County firefighters answered a 2:48 a.m. alarm Saturday (May 23) to Kaiminani Drive in Kona about 1/4 mile above Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Hwy 19) for a brushfire.

Crews arrived to find a brushfire next to the north side of the roadway. Firefighters contained the blaze, got it under control and the fire was declared out at 3:40 a.m. Part of the roadway was closed to traffic due to firefighting operations.

Hawaiʻi Island police have initiated a murder investigation in connection with an incident in Puna on Saturday morning involving a father and son.

At approximately 9:15 a.m. Saturday, police officers responded to a reported domestic incident at a home in the Fern Acres subdivision. They arrived to find medics treating an unconscious 47-year-old man. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

One-hundred seventy-two youths from 25 teams participated in the HI-PAL Panaʻewa Benefit “Click It or Ticket” Basketball Championships this past weekend at Panaʻewa Park.

In the 10-and-under division, NSP claimed the title, Andrews Hawks were runners-up and Fly Girls finished third.

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information about a 36-year-old man wanted for contempt of court. Albert Espaniola Jr. is also wanted for questioning in a reckless endangering case. He is described as “local,” approximately 5-foot-8, 170 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair. His last known address was in Hilo.
