Police charge Hilo man with burglary and other offenses

Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested and charged a Hilo man in connection with a burglary over the weekend at a Hilo business.

At 7:25 p.m. Sunday (April 26), someone broke into a business on the 700 block of Leilani Street and removed cigarettes valued at approximately $150.

Police investigation led to the identity of a suspect, identified as 32-year-old Konyaku Kaili of Hilo.

Monday (April 27) shortly after midnight, police made a traffic stop in Hilo and arrested Kaili on suspicion of traffic offenses and burglary. He was taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

At 5:25 p.m. Tuesday (April 28), detectives charged him with second-degree burglary, driving without a license and driving without insurance. His bail was set at $2,525.

He remained at the cellblock until his initial court appearance on Wednesday (April 29).
