Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a reported attempted escape from Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center early Saturday (April 25).
At about 2:05 a.m. Saturday, HCCC personnel reported that four inmates broke through a door that leads to the fenced recreational center at the jail, which is located on Punahele Street. The inmates were unable to escape from that area. HCCC personnel detained them and notified the Police Department to investigate further.
All four suspects case were arrested for attempted escape and criminal property damage. They are identified as 26-year-old Malaki McBride, 26-year-old Kawaipuna Noa, 31-year-old Douglas Kaimiola and 23-year-old Ariel Jost.
They were returned to the custody of HCCC while the Police Department’s Area I Criminal Investigations Section continues the investigation.

The lockdown initiated at Hawaii Community Correctional Center after an overnight attempted escape has been lifted.
At approximately 2 a.m. four inmates at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center attempted to escape.
The four inmates are identified as Malaki McBride, Airiel Jost, Douglas Kamiola, and Kawaipuna Noa.
The inmates used a piece of furniture to ram a door open in their housing unit. They exited through the door and were quickly restrained outside their unit by corrections officers. They never got outside the HCCC secured perimeter. A lockdown was initiated. No injuries were reported.
“Staff immediately implemented crisis response procedures to safely end the situation and prevent the escape,†said PSD Director Nolan Espinda. “I commend the staff for their quick reaction and a job well doneâ€.
An investigation is underway. Family visits are cancelled for the day at HCCC. They will be rescheduled for Sunday. Hale Nani, their reintegration and work release center, is holding visits today.
HCCC is a 226-bed facility located on two sites. The primary facility is situated on three acres in downtown Hilo. HCCC’s reintegration program, Hale Nani is located five miles away in Panaewa.
