Fire crews are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a vehicle in a carport Monday evening along Plumeria Road in Kona.

The Fire Department reports it was alerted to the blaze shortly before 6 p.m. and arrived to find the carport area and vehicle fully involved. The flames were in danger of spreading to the single family one-story wooden structure, but crews knocked them down before they could do additional damage.

No injuries were reported and two pet dogs were rescued.

The thick black smoke alarmed nearby residents and drivers along Alii Drive, although no road closures or detours were necessary.

Nine engines, two medic units and a rescue truck were among the 21 units called out to battle the fire.

No damage estimate was provided.
