The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory and high wind warning for Big Island summits until 6 p.m. this evening (March 9).

Snow and ice accumulations along with freezing fog will deposit up to one inch of new snow on Big Island summits over 12,500 feet in elevation.

Temperatures are in the upper 20s to lower 30s on the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Visibility is under half a mile due to the freezing fog.

Winds are from the southwest at 45-70 mph with localized gusts over 105 mph.
