The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a flood advisory for the Big Island until 7:15 p.m. Sunday (March 1).

At 5 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain continuing across the Big Island. The latest radar imagery shows the heaviest showers over Kohala and Kona but heavy showers have also been reported on the windward side and interior areas.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

This advisory may be extended if heavy rains continue.
