Hawaii County Civil Defense 8:30 a.m. high surf and beach closure audio message

The National Weather Service High Surf Warning for the West facing shores of Hawaii Island remains in effect and has been extended through 6 p.m., Saturday (Jan 24).

Dangerous surf conditions continue to be observed and reported across areas of West Hawaii. Surf heights of 10 to 15 feet are forecasted for the West facing shores of Hawaii Island.

Residents along the coast and in low lying areas are advised to take necessary precautions and motorists are advised to be prepared for possible debris and ponding on coastal roadways. Beachgoers swimmers and surfers are advised to exercise caution and to heed all advice given by Ocean Safety Officials.

Due to the current and ongoing dangerous surf conditions the following beaches will remain closed:

• Laaloa or Magic Sands in Kona
• Kahaluu Beach in Kona
• Kohanaiki Beach in Kona
• Ooma
• Old Airport Park
• OTEC beach
• Four Seasons beach
• Hapuna Beach
• Kaunaoa (Mauna Kea Beach)
• Mahukona Park
• Kapaa Beach Park

Coastal areas can expect large breaking surf, significant shore breaks and dangerous longshore and rip currents making entering the water extremely hazardous. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death. Inexperienced persons should remain well away from the shoreline in the affected areas. Property owners should take action to protect shoreline property, motorists should be prepared for possible road closures.

Boaters should expect recreational surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.

A small craft advisory is in effect through 6 p.m. Saturday (Jan 24) for all Hawaiian waters except Maalaea Bay.
