Volunteers needed for North Kohala storm cleanup (Jan. 17)

MEDIA RELEASE

The Kohala Center is calling upon community members to assist with environmental restoration at Keokea Beach Park and the community of Niulii in North Kohala in the wake of a powerful storm that brought heavy winds and flooding to the Hawaiian Islands earlier this month.

Volunteers are needed for a community cleanup day scheduled for Saturday, January 17, starting at 8:45 a.m. at the Keokea Beach Park parking lot, 52-128 Keokea Beach Road in Kapaau.

Cleanup will focus on Keokea Beach Park, Niulii Stream, and Konea O Kukui Garden of Peace and will include removing debris from the shoreline area, clearing and restoring waterways, removing fallen trees, replacing a foot bridge, and moving rocks.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, machetes, rakes, shovels, and plenty of aloha. Due to safety concerns, participants are asked not to bring small children or pets.

Refreshments and beverages will be provided compliments of KTA Superstores.
