The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Wind Advisory for Big Island summits until 6 a.m. Wednesday (Jan 7).

Winds are coming from the northwest to north at 35-50 mph with localized gusts near 60 mph. Winds will be strongest over the highest elevations and summit peaks mainly above 11,000 feet.

The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving. The winds can also forcefully swing doors open or shut so use caution when opening or closing vehicle doors.

Currently the Mauna Kea access road is closed above the Visitor Information Station due to dangerous, icy conditions on the summit. Public parking areas on the summit are covered with thick and dangerous ice. Rangers report that the portable toilets for the public in the summit area are completely covered by ice and are unusable.
