The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Big Island extended until 11 a.m. Saturday (Jan 3).

At 7:42 a.m. rain was continuing to fall over much of the leeward and southern potions of the Big Island. Although the rain has diminished in intensity earlier heavy downpours along with the current rainfall will keep streams running high along with ponding in low lying and poor drainage areas.

Other locations in the advisory include Kawaihae, Waimea, Waikoloa, Puuanahulu, Waikii, Keauhou, Captain Cook, Ocean View, Pahala and Naalehu.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 3:30 a.m. if heavy rains persist.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
