Marine and Winter Weather Advisories issued for the Big Island Monday (Oct 13)

An area of thunderstorms continues moving West across the coastal waters of the Hawaiian islands. The main threat over the next few hours will be from Windward Big Island waters through Oahu waters. Individual storms are moving to the West at 15 knots. Mariners can expect gusty winds up to 33 knots, locally higher waves and small mail. Thunderstorms can produce waterspouts with little or no notice. Frequent lightning will also accompany this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal objects.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 12,000 feet in elevation until 6 a.m. Tuesday (Oct 14). Snow accumulations up to three inches are forecast. Snow showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon and continue into the night. Winds are coming from the Southeast at 10-15 mph increasing to 20-35 mph with gusts over 50 mph tonight. Temperatures will be in the lower 30s. Visibility is forecast to be as low as one mile in snow showers.

The summits areas may see periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain which will make travel difficult. Be prepared for slippery roadways and limited visibility. Use caution while driving.

Mauna Kea summit access road is closed at the Visitor Information Station due to poor road conditions.
