The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 5:15 a.m. Wednesday (July 16).

At 2:12 a.m. weather radar showed moderte to heavy rain along the uplope areas of the Hilo and Puna districts. The heaviest rainfall is occurring in a thunderstorm near Volcano. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.

Other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Pepeekeo, Papaikou, Pahoa, Ookala, Mountain View, Hilo, Laupahoehoe, Keaau, Kapoho, Honomu, Hawaiian Paradise Park and Glenwood.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

On Monday (July 14) a record rainfall of 4.34 inches was set in Hilo. This breaks the old record for a July 14th which was set in 1991 at 1.89 inches.
