Strange white foam seen along Hilo shoreline determined to be algae

The Fire Department responded to a 12:20 p.m. alarm Monday (June 30) to Moku Ola (Coconut Island) in Hilo when a foamy white substance was seen along the shoreline and in the water.

Crews took samples of the white substance and air samples to do tests via their Hazmat Company 4 unit. After conferring with the Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel the white substance was determined to be an algae bloom and safe.
