Firefighters responded to a 6:04 p.m. alarm Monday (June 16) for a structure fire at 500 Hoaka Road in Hilo.

Crews arrived to find a two-story 2,200 square-foot home, built in the 1950s with light smoke coming from both floors with a locked gate and fence around the property.

A passerby had seen the smoke and alerted a neighbor who called 911. The back downstairs door had been forced open before the arrival of firefighters who found a suspicious small fire located on the bottom floor outside the bathroom.

Crews had the fire out by 6:27 p.m. It’s estimated that damage to the unoccupied home was $1,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
