Fire burns home and vehicles in Kona Saturday (June 14)

Fire/rescue crews responded to an 11:16 a.m. alarm Saturday (June 14) to a structure fire on Kealapua Street in Kona.

Firefighters arrived to find a large multi level home with about a third of it engulfed in flames spreading to the rear, multiple vehicles out front were on fire with the threat of spreading to the neighboring properties due to the intense heat.

Crews had the fire under control by 12:30 p.m. and it was declared out at 2:30 p.m. There were no injuries reported. Two people in the home were able to evacuate to a neighbor’s house. The roadway was blocked as crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

About half of the 3,000 square-foot home burned. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were on hand to tend to the needs of the displaced residents.

The cause of the fire and loss in the blaze was not available from fire dispatch. The loss of a car, pickup and van was reported. The fire department also reported many unpermitted type rooms existed in the home.
