Flood advisory issued for areas in North Hawaii

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 8:15 p.m. Friday (March 14).

At 5:12 p.m. weather radar showed an area of persistent moderate to heavy rain along the Hamakua Coast from Paauilo to Honokaa and up to the Saddle area near Waimea. The area of rain was nearly stationary.

This area of heavy rain is forecast to remain over mostly rural areas along Highway 19.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
