Rep. Gabbard votes to delay Affordable Care Act penalties

MEDIA RELEASE

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) today voted to delay Affordable Care Act (ACA) penalties for individuals and their families through the end of the year. The penalties for employers have already been delayed twice. The legislation, H.R. 4118, changes the fine from $95 (or one percent of taxable income) to $0, and provides for equal treatment of businesses and individuals.

“Our objective needs to be ensuring that hard-working people in Hawai‘i and around the country have access to affordable, quality healthcare,” said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. “People continue to face difficulties signing up for new health plans, and the security of their personal information online is still in question. Those who have been unable to sign up for their health plan due to circumstances outside their control should not be unfairly punished with a penalty. Large corporations are already getting special treatment and delays; it’s only fair that hard-working individuals are treated the same.

“The bill we passed today is a straightforward delay that allows time for individuals to sign up for health care if they didn’t have it before, or search for new plans if their old one was unexpectedly cancelled. For those who have already signed up and seen their premiums increase dramatically, I look forward to introducing legislation that offers relief to offset the premium hike.”
