The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea until noon Monday (March 3). A high wind warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday.

The summits have been experiencing freezing rain and snow above 12,000 feet in elevation. Snow accumulations of up to four inches of snow and a coating of ice is forecast.

Winds are also coming from the West at 45-75 mph with localized gusts over 80 mph.

Mauna Kea summit access road is closed above the Visitor Information Station.

The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving. The winds can also forcefully swing doors open or shut so use caution when opening or closing vehicle doors.
