The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea until 6 a.m. Tuesday (Feb 19). Snow and sleet is forecast with accumulations of one to three inches with underlying ice.

Winds are forecast to come from the Southwest at 15-25 mph with localized gusts over 35 mph. Temperatures will be in the lower 30s to upper 20s. Visibility will be as low as one mile.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow or sleet will cause travel difficulties. Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility on summit roadways.

Mauna Kea access road was closed Tuesday night due to snow, ice and fog on the roadway.
