Winter weather advisory in effect for Big Island summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory for Big Island summits above elevations of 11,000 feet until noon Tuesday (Feb 4).

Freezing rain is forecast with ice accmulating up to depths of 1/4 inch, snow up to two inches along with possibly significant snow drifts.

Summit roads may become difficult to use or impassable, hiking trails may become buried, the ice will pose a serious slip hazard.

Winds are expected to reach speeds of 15-25 mph with localized gusts to 30 mph at times. The wind will be mainly coming from the South. A wind advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday (Feb 4).

Summit temperatures are forecast to be in the upper 20s warming up to the 40s.
