The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Big Island until 3:15 p.m.

At 1 p.m. weather radar and rain gauge reports indicated persistent areas of moderate to heavy rain across the Kona and Leeward Kohala coasts of the Big Island as well as parts of the Puna coast. Several inches of water have been reported as being on the Akoni Pule Highway between Kawaihae and Hawi. The advisory may be extended in heavy rains continue.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
