Coast Guard rescues sole occupant of overdue vessel

MEDIA RELEASE

The Coast Guard responded Thursday morning to a report of an overdue vessel 35 nautical miles west of the Big Island.

A C-130 from Oahu’s Air Station Barbers Point launched on the case and located the vessel, vectoring in the Coast Guard Cutter Kittiwake.

The C-130 dropped flares on scene to increase visibility.

The vessel’s only occupant fastened safety line to his body and jumped overboard towards a flare in the water.

Some time later, the survivor pulled himself back to his boat, stripping his clothes once back onboard.

CGC Kittiwake arrived on scene and towed the vessel, which was out of gas and its master back to Keauhou.
