Big Island lane closures for the week of Nov. 12-15

— MAMALAHOA HIGHWAY (ROUTE 11) —

1) VICINITY OF KEAAU TO MOUNTAIN VIEW

Alternating single lane closures on Volcano Road (Route 11) in both directions between Milepost Markers 8.6 and 13.4, in the vicinity of Keaau to Mountain View, on Tuesday, November 12, through Friday, November 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for pavement reconstruction.

— MAMALAHOA HIGHWAY (ROUTE 190) —

1) VICINITY OF MAKALEI

Alternating lane closures on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) in both directions between Uluoa Street and Old Kona Village Road on Tuesday, November 12, through Friday, November 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., daily, for sign installations.

— HAWAII BELT ROAD—

1) VICINITY OF UMAUMA STREAM BRIDGE

Alternating lane closures on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) in both directions near Milepost 16 over the Umauma Stream Bridge, in the vicinity of Hakalau, 24/7, for bridge repairs. Travel speed over the bridge has been reduced to 25 MPH and vehicle weight limited to 25 tons. All trucks heavier than 25 tons must use Kauniho Road, Old Mamalahoa Highway and Leopolino Road as a detour route.

2) VICINITY OF LAUPAHOEHOE GULCH

Alternating single lane closures on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) in both directions between Milepost Markers 26.0 and 27.0 in the vicinity of Ka’awali’I Gulch, Tuesday, November 12, through Friday, November 15, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, for roadway improvements.

3) VICINITY OF KA’AWALI’I GULCH

Alternating single lane closures on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) in both directions between Milepost Markers 27.9 and 29.0 in the vicinity of Ka’awali’I Gulch, Tuesday, November 12, through Friday, November 15, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, for roadway improvements.

— KILAUEA AVENUE —

Improvements on Kilauea Avenue will include sidewalk, sewer line and waterline repairs, with road asphalt resurfacing to follow.

Concrete sidewalk repairs on the four corners of the Wailoa/Waiakea Stream Bridge, in front of Pono Place, and fronting the vacant lot (on the Hamakua side) of the Wailoa/Waiakea Stream Bridge are scheduled to begin Nov. 14.

Completion of the concrete sidewalk repairs will take about 3-4 days starting Nov. 14. The contractor will excavate, prepare, and form the sidewalk in front of Pono Place, then across the street fronting the vacant lot and lastly, the four corners of Wailoa Stream Bridge. The concrete pour is schedule over one to two days.

On street parking, alongside the vacant lot will not be available, and lane closures are between the hours of 8:15 a.m. – 4 p.m. Working hours are scheduled 7:45 a.m.-4 p.m.

On Friday, Nov. 22, excavation of the waterline begins. The majority of the work will occur on Saturday and Sunday Nov. 23-24. Merchants and residents on Kilauea Avenue from Aupuni Street intersection to the Wailoa/Waiakea Stream Bridge will be affected by intermittent shut off to their water service on these dates. The Department of Water Supply will advertise a shut off notice in the Hawaii Tribune Herald next week.

Saturday, Dec. 7, a new sewer line, and manhole will be installed in the middle of Kilauea Avenue fronting Kawamoto Store; weather permitting. No left turns onto Aupuni Street will be allowed.

With the completion of the waterline and sewer line, road resurfacing is scheduled to begin on Monday, Dec. 9 from the Aupuni Street intersection to the Wailoa/Waiakea Stream Bridge; weather permitting.

Yamada and Sons Inc, was awarded the $868,000 contract. Roadwork will continue through December and January and no roadwork, Dec. 25, Jan. 1 and Jan. 20. Completion for this project is scheduled for early February.

UPDATE, 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14

The contractor is also adjusting manhole covers through Friday in the middle of Kilauea Avenue to the Wailoa/Waiakea Stream Bridge, (on the Hamakua side), weather permitting.

One-lane closures on Kilauea Avenue began Thursday.
Parking on Kilauea Avenue from the Aupuni intersection to the bridge is not allowed.

Left turn lanes from Kilauea on to Aupuni Street and from Aupuni Street on to Kilauea Avenue will close periodically.
