Flood advisory issued for Big Island extended to Windward areas

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 1 a.m. Monday (Nov 11).

At 9:54 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain along the entire Windward coast. These showers were nearly stationary. Ponding in roads has been reported in several areas along with Windward coast.

Other locations in the advisory incloude, but are not limited to, Waipio Valley, Paauilo, Honokaa, Hilo, Mountain View, Upolu Airport and Hawi.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
