Rep. Tulsi Gabbard released the following statement to honor and recognize Filipino American History Month.

October has been designated as Filipino American History Month since 1988 by the Filipino American National Historical Society.

“As one of the largest ethnic groups in Hawaii, Filipino Americans have made tremendous contributions to our culture and our community,” Gabbard said. “They have been an integral part of Hawaii culture ever since the first sakadas came to our islands seeking job opportunities on our sugar plantations and in our pineapple fields. Over the years, the Filipino community continues to contribute, serving in all levels of public office, in our Armed Forces, and creating jobs of their own through small businesses and entrepreneurship. This month, we honor the history and accomplishments of all Filipino Americans.”

Gabbard has been an advocate in Congress for legislation to make sure Filipino WWII veterans receive their promised benefits for fighting alongside American troops.

She also supports comprehensive immigration reform that recognizes unique challenges facing the Filipino-American community in Hawaii, including family reunification.
