A driver was injured Sunday morning when his car flipped off a bridge and landed upside down about 40 feet down a river embankment along Hawaii Belt Road near Hilo, according to the Fire Department.
A bystander helped the man out of his four-door sedan before rescue crews arrived to secure the man in a rescue basket and haul him up to the road using rescue ropes.
The cause of the crash, which occurred about 9:50 a.m. near mile marker 6, is under investigation.
The driver, who was not identified, was taken to Hilo Medical Center.
