St. Michael’s celebration expands to two days (Sept. 28-29)

MEDIA RELEASE

Multi-cultural food, keiki activities, live entertainment, a country store and silent auction are part of the family fun at the annual St. Michael the Archangel Feast Day Celebration.

Times are 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29.

Admission is free and proceeds from food and booth sales, plus the silent auction, benefit the Parish Building Fund. Keiki can purchase a $5 Fun Bracelet that entitles them to enjoy the inflatables, a hot dog and a drink.

Built in 1850, St. Michael the Archangel Church was damaged beyond repair during the October 2006 earthquake and subsequently decommissioned and demolished in November of 2009.

The Kailua congregation continues to worship in a tent and has not yet realized its building fund goals while construction of the new church is underway on Alii Drive.

Festivities for the Feast Day Celebration begin at the 5 p.m. Mass Saturday at the church tent at 74-574 Honokohau St. in the Honokohau Industrial Park. The service will showcase the congregation’s rich ethnic heritage when members of various cultures participate by wearing traditional dress in a colorful Flag Progression of Nations. After Mass, parishioners will serve free samples of their heritage foods.

The fun continues Sunday at a nearby, larger white tent with entrance on Kamanu Street. Find fresh pies and pastries, jellies and jams, pickled veggies, crafts and plants at the festival’s Country Store. Talented parishioners will stage entertainment and kids can enjoy games and inflatables. A food booth will offer steak and shoyu chicken plates for $10.

A live and silent auction—touting merchandise from local businesses and treasures from residents—benefits the Building Fund. Those wishing to donate can contact the church office at 326-7771.

St. Michael the Archangel Church is part of the North Kona Catholic Community that includes Immaculate Conception Church in Holualoa, St. Paul’s Church in Honalo, St. Peter’s Church in Keauhou and Holy Rosary Church in Kalaoa. NKCC serves over 1,500 families and a steady stream of visitors, many who return year after year.
