A 27-year-old man died Friday afternoon after he was pulled unconscious from waters off Honokaa Waipio Road in Honokaa.

He had been picking opihi on the shoreline when he apparently was swept into the ocean.

Fire rescue personnel responding to the 1:55 p.m. call and found the man floating face down in an area known as Kewala’s.

He was retrieved from water by crews using a billy pugh net.

The man was transported by paramedics to the Hale Hoola Hamakua emergency room, where he was pronounced dead.

The man has not yet been identified.
