2nd Annual Hawaii County Keiki Triathlon (Oct. 19)

MEDIA RELEASE

The county Department of Parks and Recreation and the Hawaii Isle Police Activities League (HI-PAL) host the 2nd Annual Keiki Triathlon on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Kona Community Aquatic Center and Makaeo Park, also known as Old Kona Airport Park.

Children ages 7 to 14 years old are invited to swim, bike and run in a miniature version of the Ironman World Championship that will be held one week earlier.

The entrance fee is $5 per child. Registration will end on Friday, Oct. 4.

Registration forms are available online at the Department’s website: www.hawaiicounty.gov/parks-and-recreation

They also can be obtained from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at the following locations:

* Yano Hall in Captain Cook
* Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona
* Puu Nui Park in Waikoloa
* Waimea Community Center
* Kamehameha Park in Kapaau
* Hilo Recreation office within Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale

To ensure the athletes’ safety, enrollment will be limited to the first 30 children who sign up in each of the four age-group categories or a maximum 120 total racers. All participants must supply their own bicycle, helmet, swim goggles and other equipment.

Racers must check in between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on race day.

The youngest children will start the triathlon by entering the Kona Community Aquatics Center pool promptly at 8:30 a.m., followed by the older age-group categories.

Individual events will consist of a 100-yard swim, 3.2-mile bicycle race and a mile-long run. The 7- and 8-year-old children will race half those distances.

The Keiki Triathlon will be part of the Mayor’s 2013 Health Fest, which is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium. Designed to promote public health and wellness, the event will feature health screenings, live demonstrations, informational booths and keiki activities.
