Hawaii 24/7 Staff

A 27-year-old spearfisherman apparently drowned Wednesday afternoon in waters off Pebble Beach in the Kona Paradise Subdivision in South Kona.

About 4 p.m., a witness saw the man diving below the surface of the water, but did not see him surface.

The witness then called 911.

Rescue crews aboard the Fire Department helicopter spotted the body in about 20-30 feet of water and two personnel swam out to retrieve it.

The body was turned over to paramedics, who determined the man had died.

The incident remains under investigation by the police.
