A helicopter carrying five people made an emergency landing Thursday afternoon near Hilo Airport.

The helicopter, which was heading to Hilo, apparently suffered engine failure.

The helicopter made an emergency landing at about 1:15 p.m. by auto rotating to the ground and came to rest on its side outside the airport fence near the intersection of Kanoelehua and Kekuanaoa.

The pilot and four passengers did not require medical attention.

Total damage to the helicopter, which is operated by Paradise Helicopter, remains unknown.

The state Department of Transportation and the NTSB are investigating.
