Two hundred twelve youths participated in 59 games during HI-PAL’s 2013 Elementary/Intermediate School Basketball League held at the Pāpaʻikou, Andrews and Honomū gyms from March 5 through May 23. Six teams represented the first-time elementary schools division and 13 represented the intermediate schools division. The breakdown of the participants was 75 from the elementary division and 137 from the intermediate division.

Coming out on top in the elementary school division was Waiākea Elementary School coached by Randy Apele. Members of the team were Kiai Apele, Michael Bugado, Makana Credo, Kawai Kiko, Magnus Namohala-Rolos, Guyson Ogata, Jerek Prudencio and Skyler Soultz.

Second place in the elementary school division was Keaʻau Elementary coached by Justin Young. Members of the team were George Abadilla-Lee, Bryant Cabaccang, Bradley Cabico, Antonio Calamayan, Sam Doan, Patrick Mears, Stanley Namnama, Neth Nethon, Ronald Pascua, Aizeya Young and Justice Young.

First place in the intermediate school division was Waiākea Intermediate School #3 coached by Guy Nakamoto. Members of the team were Wesley Amuimuia, Kenneth Bugado, Michael Bugado, Justin Cabanila, Treisen Ishimoto, Shaun Kojima, Calvin Mattos and Kien Uyeda.

Second place in the intermediate school division was Hilo Intermediate #1 (Kaunuʻu After School Program) coached by Linda Lopez and Tani Lorenzo. Members of the team were Juan Aikichy, Travis Almarza, Ezekiel Debrum, Isaac Gideon, Alexander Hernandez, Vinson Ishii, Lawrence Padasdao, Jamel Thompson and Calelenson Yowan.

Third place in the intermediate school division was Keaʻau #1 coached by Joe Villa. Members of the team were Kaine Abadilla-Lee, Reynaldo Arcellana, Mark Calamayan, Solomon Escalante, Rico Handy, Jim Hisaiah, Shane Namnama, Jyric Queniahan, John Tamura, Eric Tejada and Jo-Jo Villa.

Remaining HI-PAL activities during the summer months include:

    5-on-5 basketball tournament (for ages 8 and under and 9-10 only)
  • June 29 in Waimea
    3-on-3 basketball tournament (for ages 9-10 and 11-12 only)
  • July 7 in Kohala
    3-on-3 basketball tournament (ages 5-6 through high school)
  • July 20 in PāpaÊ»aloa
    volleyball tournament (ages to be determined)
  • July 20-21 Kona
    3-on-3 basketball tournament (ages 5-6 through high school)
  • August 3, 2013 in Kaʻū
    3-on-3 basketball tournament (ages 5-6 through high school)
  • August 17 in HonokaÊ»a
    3-on-3 basketball tournament (ages 5-14).
