Dump truck rolls over and catches fire in Kona, one person dead

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:04 p.m. alarm Saturday (June 1) to Kaiminani Drive near Ahi Ahi Street for a dump truck rollover crash.

Arriving crews found a dump truck that had rolled over on fire. The occupant of the truck had been ejected during the crash and was dead at the scene.

The dump truck damaged a light post, electrical box, three parked vehicles and a structure.

Kaiminani Drive was closed as firefighters extinigushed the fire, HELCO worked on electrical systems damaged in the crash and Department of Public Works cleaned-up the roadway.

The police department announced the road open to traffic at 8:41 p.m. that evening.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
