The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood warning for Hawaii County until 12 midnight Saturday (May 18)

At 8:45 p.m. weather radar showed torrential rain that was nearly stationary along the Leeward Kohala slopes between Kawaihae Road and Mahukona.

Other locations in the warning include, but are not limited to, Kawaihae, Mahukona, the Kohala Mountain Road and Akoni Pule Highway between Kawaihae and Hawi. The warning may be extended if rains continue.

People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
