Team Palamanui presents winning menu at benefit dinner

Special to Hawaii 24/7

At a benefit dinner on May 2, Team Palamanui presented the menu that won the Bronze Medal at the ACF Student Culinary Competition, during December on Oahu.

The dinner for 50 guests at Hokulia was a benefit for Equip the Kitchens at Hawaii Community College-Palamanui through the ACF Kona Kohala Chefs Association 501c3 charitable organization.

Team Palamanui includes four current students and one recent graduate student of Hawaii Community College-West Hawaii.

All are members of the ACF Junior Chefs of the ACF Kona Kohala Chef Association. Viktor Schmidt, executive chef at Sheraton Kona Resort, was the team coach and Jean Hull served as team manager.

It has been a long time dream of Hull to have students who win a culinary competition deliver the menu as a dinner. The 50 guests gave the students a long standing ovation at the end of the dinner. Diners said they were thrilled with the delectable flavors of each menu item and the flawless presentation.

Hull said she believes this is the first time students have presented the skills, flavors and plate presentations to the public following a American Culinary Federation culinary competition.

In addition to hosting this benefit, Hokulia delivered all of the proceeds from ticket sales to the Equip the Kitchen Campaign for Palamanui. One guest was so impressed she wrote an additional check for EKCP for $1,000.
