MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii Preparatory Academy hosts its Second Annual Earth Day Family Celebration and Environmental Science Symposium from 8 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at the school’s Ulu Malama Terrace Farm, located at the Upper Campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is presented in partnership with The Kohala Center’s Hawaii Island School Garden Network.

Student teams from HPA Middle School, HPA Upper School, Honokaa High School, Waikoloa Middle School, and West Hawaii Explorations Academy (WHEA) will present reports on projects ranging from agro-ecology to ocean conservation.

Community members can choose to participate in one of four workshops: tree planting, history and cultivation of uala, cooking with local foods harvested from the HPA gardens, and vermi-composting and compost teas. Lunch will follow.

To register, or for more information, contact Dr. Koh Ming Wei at 808-443-9231 or mwkoh@hpa.edu.

HPA’s Ohana Sustainability events are funded by the Will J. Reid Foundation and the Richard Smart Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.

The next Ohana Sustainability event at HPA is the Sustainable Fiber Arts Symposium May 3-4.
