By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3:37 p.m. alarm Saturday (March 23) to Orr’s Beach in the Waawaa area of Puna for a drowning.

Ground crews and Chopper One arrived on the scene and found friends of the victim on shoreline. The friends said the man went into the ocean and soon got into trouble. The friends attempted a rescue but the swimmer disappeared underwater.

Rescue crews quickly found a 37-year-old man underwater about 10 yards offshore. Rescue divers brought the victime to the surface and Chopper One airlifted the man to a medic unit on Highway 137 where he was taken to Hilo Medical Center.
