Hawaii No. 1 for long term care facility quality

MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii ranks higher than any other state in the quality of its nursing facilities. 38 percent of nursing facilities in Hawaii earned a five out of a possible five stars from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for their overall performance in health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of medical care.

This compares to a median of 21 percent for all states. Only three other states had greater than 30 percent of their facilities with five-star ratings.

U.S. News & World Report just released its fifth annual Best Nursing Homes ratings, highlighting the top nursing homes in each state and nearly 100 major metropolitan areas.

The ratings cover more than 15,000 nursing homes nationwide.

Nursing home ratings come from: 1) Health Inspections, 2) Staffing, and 3) Quality Measures.

A star rating is provided for each of these three sources. Then, these three ratings are combined to calculate an overall rating. This information gives a “snap shot” of the care individual nursing homes give.

“What this means for Hawaii’s families is that they’ve got some of the nation’s best options for the care of their loved ones. This validates the collaborative efforts throughout our state to share best practices,” said George W. Greene, president and CEO of The Healthcare Association of Hawaii.

The Healthcare Association of Hawaii has been the leading voice of health care since 1939.

The Healthcare Association of Hawaii’s 109 member organizations include all of the acute care hospitals in the state of Hawaii, a majority of home health agencies and hospices, as well as long term care facilities and other health care organizations including durable medical equipment, air and ground ambulance, blood bank and respiratory therapy.

In addition to providing quality care to all of Hawaii’s residents, our members contribute significantly to Hawaii’s economy by employing nearly 20,000 people statewide.

In a time of unprecedented change in health care, The Healthcare Association of Hawaii is committed to working with providers across the continuum of care toward a health care system that offers the best possible quality of care to the people of Hawaii.
