Winter weather advisory continues for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has continued the winter weather advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 8,000 feet through 12 noon today (Jan 30).

Up to half and inch of snow and light ice are reported on the summit with snow, freezing rain and fog making travel by car or hiking hazardous. The Mauna Kea Access Road is closed to the public above the Visitor Information Station.

Winds on the summits are from the West at 10-20 mph with temperatures in the 30s. Visibility is reported to be below one mile.

Mauna Kea rangers report Mauna Kea Access Road is open to the public. Because road conditions can change quickly be sure to check road conditions via the website below.
