HONOLULU – Proclaiming Jan. 25, 2013, “Hawaii National Board Certified Teachers Day,” Gov. Neil Abercrombie joined representatives of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (National Board) and the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) in congratulating Hawaii’s 65 school teachers statewide who this year earned National Board certification. They add to the ranks of 343 other Hawaii teachers who have their National Board certification.

In addition, 16 teachers this year have renewed their National Board certification for 10 years by going through a process designed to help them build on the ongoing and complex professional growth process that supports accomplished teaching.

“These exemplary educators have made an immense investment in their professional growth and for their students,” Gov. Abercrombie said. “We look forward to their continued contributions to their students’ future, mentoring and coaching colleagues to improve their effectiveness in the classroom, and advancing the profession.”

“The Hawaii Teacher Standards Board would like to congratulate the 65 new National Board-certified teachers who have successfully undertaken the rigorous National Board certification process and demonstrated their content knowledge and teaching skills against the most advanced standards in the nation,” said Terry Holck, HTSB chairperson. “We would also like to commend the 16 teachers who renewed their National Board certification this past year. The Hawaii Teacher Standards Board is proud of our commitment to teacher excellence by providing subsidies and support sessions to Hawaii’s teachers who elect to go through this process. Every day, these accomplished teachers are having a positive impact on students in Hawaii.”

Friday’s event was the last of four ceremonies held across the state – on Kauai, Maui, Hawaii and Oahu – so that family members could join in congratulating the educators. The Oahu ceremony was attended by 29 newly certified teachers (of the 65 statewide) and 6 teachers renewing certification (of the 16 statewide).

National Board-certified teachers are highly accomplished educators who have successfully met rigorous standards. To meet these standards, teachers must demonstrate their knowledge and skills through an extensive series of performance-based assessments that include teaching portfolios, student work samples, videotapes, and a thorough analysis of their own classroom teaching and student learning. Candidates for National Board certification also complete a series of written exercises of their subject content knowledge, as well as their understanding of how to teach the subject to their students.
