High surf advisory for East facing shores continues

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a high surf advisory for East facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island until 6 p.m. Monday (Jan 14).

The strong trade winds will bring surf along East facing shores of Maui and the Big Island are forecast to be eight to 12 feet with locally higher sets. The East facing shores of Kauai, Oahu and Molokai are forecast to have surf of seven to 10 feet.

Coastal areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out.

A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Monday (Jan 14) for all Hawaiian waters except the leeward waters of Maui County and Maalaea Bay.
