High surf advisory for East facing shores of the Big Island

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for East facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island until 6 p.m. Sunday (Jan 13).

The strong trade winds will bring surf along East facing shores of Maui and the Big Island of eight to 12 feet with locally higher sets. The East facing shores of Kauai, Oahu and Molokai are forecast to have surf of seven to 10 feet.

Coastal areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out. The greatest impacts of the high surf are possible along windward facing beaches this morning due to the building surf and large high tide. Minor overwash is possible across shoreline roads on East facing shores.

A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday (Jan 13) for all Hawaiian waters except the leeward waters of Maui County and Maalaea Bay.
