Fire burns home in Honomu, resident rescued by neighbor

Fire/rescue units responded to a 6:14 a.m. alarm Wednesday (Jan 2) to 28-1706 Puako Street in Honomu for a structure fire.

Crews found a home engulfed in flames with the roof collapsed. The occupant of the home was rescued by a neighbor before firefighters arrived. The person was taken via ambulance to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 6:50 a.m. and it was declared out at 7:30 a.m.

The loss from the fire was estimated to be $60,000 with $15,000 saved. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
