High surf advisory for Hawaiian Islands

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf warning for North facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui. A high surf warning also for West facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, and Molokai. A high surf advisory for West facing shores of Oahu and North facing shores of the Big Island.

The high surf advisory for the Big Island is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday (Dec 26). A large Northwest swell will bring elevated surf to North and West facing shores of most of the main Hawaiian Islands today.

Surf is forecast to be in the 20 to 25 foot range for North and West facing shores of Niihau, Kauai and Molokai and North facing shores of Oahu and Maui. The surf will be peaking today then lowering from late this afternoon through early Wednesday morning.

Surf for the Waianae Coast and the North shores of the Big Island are forecast to be in the 10 to 15 foot range peaking today then slowly lowering through early Wednesday morning.

The high surf will cause hazardous conditions in the surf zone including deadly rip currents. Battering waves will pound the shoreline.

Beach goers are urged to stay out of the water and away from shore breaks due to the hazardous wave action.

A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday (Dec 26) for all Hawaiian waters.
