Wind, surf and marine advisories for the Big Island

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for all of the Big Island except for Kona and the summits until 4 a.m. Saturday (Dec 15).

Winds are forecast to come from the East at 20-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph for Kohala, Ka‘u and for Saddle Road areas above 5,000 feet. Winds this strong can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving.

A high surf advisory continues for East facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Sunday (Dec 16).

Surf is forecast to be rough and seven to nine feet in height. The rough breaking waves will cause hazardous conditions in the surf zone including dangerous rip currents.

Gale warnings for the Pailolo and Alenuihaha Channels have been extended through 6 a.m Saturday (Dec 15). A small craft advisory remains in effect for remaining Hawaiian waters through 6 p.m. Sunday (Dec 16).
