Jarvis Naoki Higa has been charged following his escape last week from Hawaii Community Correctional Center, according to authorities.

Higa, 35, faces new charges of escape in the first degree, kidnapping, second degree assault, second degree robbery, criminal property damage and car theft.

A team of about 15 law enforcement officers captured him Friday at about 8:15 p.m. at a home in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in Ka‘u.

The other escapee, Ryan James Jeffries-Hamar, 31, remains at large.

On Friday, police followed a tip to Ocean View and arrested Higa.

Higa is being held at the Hilo Police Station without bail.

Higa and Jeffries-Hamar escaped from the Hilo jail Wednesday morning after overpowering and assaulting a corrections officer and taking off in the jail librarian’s car. A task force of at least one dozen officers was assigned to track down the two escapees.

Authorities believe Jeffries-Hamar may return to the west side of the island. He is considered dangerous.

If anyone sees Jeffries-Hamar, police urge them to call 911.
