On Saturday, Nov. 3, the 8th Annual Karate Championship was held at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona. The karate tournament was hosted by the International Karate League (IKL), Kona Branch, under the direction of Hanshi Julian Shiroma.
Presiding over the event was the founder and chief instructor of the International Karate League, Shihan (Master) Walter K. Nishioka of Manoa Valley, Oahu.
More than 120 competitors from karate schools across the Big Island and Oahu participated at the event.
The tournament featured competition in three events: Kata (Forms), Kobudo (Weapons), and Kumite (Sparring).
Winning the Most Outstanding Karate Competitor Perpetual Trophy was 17-year-old Jace Shiroma of the IKL Captain Cook Dojo. He placed first in Kata Men and Women Black Belt Open Division, first in Kobudo Men Brown and Black Belt Open, and first in Kumite Men Brown and Black Belt Open.
Winning the Most Outstanding Dojo Perpetual Trophy for the fourth year in a row was the IKL Captain Cook Dojo with 91 points, IKL Kailua-Kona was second with 71 points, and IKL Keaau was third with 50 points.
