Hawaii 24/7 Staff
Five-time Ultraman world champion Alexandre Ribeiro turned in the day’s best bike time to take the lead Friday after Day 1 of the super-endurance race.
Ribeiro, 47, of Brazil, wrapped up the day with a time of 8 hours, 28 minutes and 53 seconds. He is more than 20 minutes ahead of Nino Cokan, 39, of Slovenia.
Meanwhile, Kathy Winkler, 46, of California, leads the women with a time of 9:04:23. That was good enough to land her in fourth place overall.
Day 1 included a 6.2-mile swim from Kailua Bay to Keauhou Bay, plus a bike ride to Volcano. Day 2 is a bike ride from Volcano along the east and north coasts, ending in Hawi. Day 3 is a double-marathon distance run from Hawi along the Kohala Coast to the finish line at Old Kona Airport Park complex.
The winner typically arrives about noon Sunday.
Entrants to the Ultraman World Championships are former individual finishers of either Ultraman Canada or Ultraman World Championships on the Big Island and have completed at least an event with 2.4 miles swim, 112 miles bike, and 26.2 miles run or equivalent in the 18 months prior.
