A new course and two new champions for Lavaman Keauhou this year.

Professional triathlete Chris Leito cruised to the win in the men’s division and Honolulu’s Rae Bastoni outpaced the women to take the 2012 Lavaman Keauhou crowns.

“It’s a challenging race. The swim and bike went well. The run was hilly,” Leito said. “I’ve never done this race before. It’s always fun to race on the island, though.”

In second place was last year’s champ and Lavaman regular Tim Marr, of Honolulu.

“I had a pretty good day. Things change when Chris Leito enters a race,” he said. “He is without a doubt the best cyclist in the sport, so I wanted to beat him out of the water. Then my whole goal was to keep him in sight on the bike.”

That only worked part way into the bike and Marr didn’t have enough left to chase him down on the run.

“This golf course running is more difficult than regular road running. It’s tough to get a rhythm going,” Marr said. “This is probably the hardest course of this distance in Hawaii. It’s definitely harder than Waikoloa.”

Bastoni said she has competed in both Lavaman races – Keauhou and Waikoloa – but was thrilled to win her first title.

“I could not have asked for anything to go better today,” she said. “I just love to race, but this hands down the toughest in the state. That run was brutal.”

The race included a 0.93-mile swim in Keauhou Bay, 24.8-mile bike ride and a 6.2-mile run through the golf course and ending on the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort luau grounds.

The race previously had been sponsored by Keauhou Outrigger Hotel, which now has closed its doors.

“We did make the move to the Sheraton early this year and we did have to change the bike and run courses a little bit,” said race director Gerry Rott.

Sheraton General Manager Steve Lindburg was experiencing his first Lavaman, as a spectator.

“This is definitely the highest and best use of a partnership in our community,” he said. “This is really cool.”
