Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Ka Makani Players will present one of the most popular musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” Nov. 15-18 at the school’s Gates Performing Arts Center.

Shows begin at 7 p.m. Nov. 15-17 and at 4 p.m. Nov. 18.

HPA theatre instructor Marina Tichotsky is the director, music director, and costume designer. Jared Terpak is technical director and set/lighting designer.

“The Sound of Music,” set early in 1938 in Austria, is based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers.

Captain Von Trapp, a widower, runs his home like the ship he once commanded. His children are resentful of the governesses that their father keeps hiring, and have managed to run each of them off one by one.

When Maria arrives, she is initially met with the same hostility, but her kindness, understanding, and sense of fun soon draws them to her and brings some much-needed joy into all their lives — including the Captain’s.

Eventually he and Maria find themselves falling in love, even though the Captain is already engaged to a Baroness and Maria is still a nun.

Their personal conflicts soon become overshadowed by world events as Austria is about to come under the control of Germany, and the Captain may soon find himself drafted into the German navy and forced to fight against his own country.

“The Sound of Music” is filled with some of the most wonderful classics. In addition to the title song, the show includes “My Favorite Things,” “Doe a Deer,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” So Long Farewell,” Climb Every Mountain,” and “Edelweiss,” among others.

The cast features Angie Shumov as Maria and Duncan Michael as Captain Von Trapp. The Von Trapp children are played by Kimi Cantyne (Liesl), Churchill Crean (Fredrich), Nani Welch-Keliihoomalu (Louisa), DJ Sekiya (Kurt), Eliana Kaplan (Brigitta), Maiah Police (Marta), and Melia Becker (Gretl).

More than 40 other HPA students play supporting roles, with 20 more students in the orchestra and assisting with production.

Tickets, which only are available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
